Charles Williams was born in Battersea on 30 December 1840, and was christened at St. Mary's Battersea on 24 January 1841. His parents were John Williams, a brewer's labourer, and Emma Louisa Soundy, whose family is often used as an example of extreme poverty in academic reports, as her mother wrote many letters to Pangbourne parish for assistance.
Jane Aris was born on 22 April 1844 and christened at Holy Trinity Church in Clapham on 28 April 1844. Her father was a coach-smith and blacksmith originally from Richmond; her mother was Patience Fentiman-Usher, the illegitimate daughter of gentleman Thomas Hyde Fentiman and servant Ann Usher.
Charles and Jane married in Holy Trinity Church, Clapham on 9 September 1861. They lived in Battersea where Charles worked as an iron labourer. In around the late 1880s they moved to Hampton where they lived in a railway cottage and Charles worked as a watchman.
In 1895 Jane died aged 51. The family m0ved to Sunbury-on-Thames where Charles worked as a night watchman. After all the children had moved out and married, and the youngest son George had died, his son Fred was the only remaining child with Charles in their cottage in Sunbury Lane, Walton-on-Thames. Fred married and had children, but remained with his father. Charles retired in the 1900s and helped to raise his grandchildren. Charles died aged 81 and was buried on 9 November 1922 in St. Mary's, Walton-on-Thames. Children: Charles Edward Williams (1863-1900) William Williams (1865-?) Anne Williams (c1873-?)
