Francis Tivey & Lucretia Brown - 3xgreat-grandparents
Francis Tivey was born in 1838 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, to Isaac Tivey and Phoebe Morris. His father was a tailor, woollen draper and part-time pawnbroker who declared bankrupt and entered debtor's gaol in 1855, later battled alcoholism, a head tumour and delirium tremens, which resulted in an unsuccessful suicide attempt in 1869. Despite the financial problems, the family had general domestic servants.
Lucretia Brown was born on 4 December 1832 in Harston, Cambridgeshire, and was christened there on 8 July 1834. Her father, Thomas Brown, was a clerk and bookkeeper in London before moving to Cambridgeshire to set up a new farming and carrying firm (Drason & Brown). Her mother, Mary Elizabeth Flamell, was a tailor's daughter from Finsbury. Thomas Brown died in 1836 when Lucretia was only three, and her mother then continued his business until her retirement in the 1840s. Lucretia and several of her sisters worked as teachers in a school in Walsall, Staffordshire, which was run by their eldest sister Mary Elizabeth Brown. After Mary married and soon died in 1855, the school and sisters disbanded.
Francis and Lucretia likely met when Lucretia was working as a dressmaker with or for his father (this situation is shown on the 1861 census). They married on 6 April 1863 in Westminster, and had seven children, of whom five survived childhood. Ten years into the marriage, and just as their final son was born, Francis abandoned the family.
Francis settled in Hulme, Manchester, with Mary Ann Palmer, who was eleven years his junior (and 17 years younger than Lucretia). Together they had three children before emigrating to the United States. They first lived in Springfield, Massachusetts where they had two further children, then settled in Hartford, Connecticut in about 1888. There the couple set themselves up as community members and attended the local church. Francis continued his work as a tailor from home.
Francis died on 10 June 1899 in Hartford aged 61. Mary Ann outlived three of their children and died in 1914 aged 65.
Lucretia, meanwhile, remained in England and raised her children by herself. She worked as a tailoress to support them. They remained in Dudley, Staffordshire before moving to Wolverhampton and then to St. Pancras in London, where Lucretia lived with her youngest son Charles. She then spent time living with a granddaughter in Nottingham, before returning to Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, where she lived with her son Charles and his family in Russell Road. She died there on 4 January 1919, aged 86.
