James Ellis was born in around 1762 in Pirbright, Surrey. His parents are unknown.
Sarah Good was born in around 1765. Her parents are unknown. James and Sarah married on 7 August 1784 in Seale, Surrey. They had six children.
Sarah died aged 66 and was buried in Seale on 16 August 1831. James remarried in St. Nicholas church, Guildford, on 7 February 1833 to widow Hannah Etherington.
In 1841 James and Hannah were living in Seale, with an eight-year-old John Etherington (possibly Hannah's son or grandson) and a labourer William Novell (possibly an employee of James, who was recorded as a farmer). In 1851 James and Hannah were living alone in Seale, with James by then in receipt of parish relief.
James died aged ninety and was buried on 15 April 1852. Hannah is believed to have survived him.
