09-10-1993 | The Independent - Jew wins pounds 8,000 over abuse (A JEWISH father won more than pounds 8,000 compensation yesterday after neighbours subjected his family to a three-year campaign of abuse. Daniel Israel, 45, a photographer, claimed that his tormentors hung pigs’ tails and Union flags on their washing line, sprayed his children with insecticide and spat at him. He said that he, his wife Ann and daughters Clare, 10, and Frances, 7, had been targeted after moving into their four-bedroomed semi-detached home in Twickenham, south-west London. In statements to Uxbridge County Court, west London, Mr Israel said his family was spied on and harassed by their neighbour Bridget Cunningham, her brothers Robert and Peter Bodsworth, all aged in their sixties, and her partner Michael Pocock. After Mrs Cunningham issued a writ against him alleging abuse, trespass and assault, Mr Israel issued a counter-claim in which he alleged abuse, harassment, assaults, trespass and noise, all of which were denied. Mr Justice Green said he believed the neighbours were trying to drive the family from their home, and condemned the neighbours’ ’appalling conduct’. He made the award to Mr Israel ’for the upset, distress and humiliation he has suffered’) |

18-02-1937 | Gloucestershire Echo: Mrs. John Playle dies at 97 - lifelong worker for Methodism (Mrs. John Playle, a well-known figure in political and religious circles in Cheltenham for over half a century, died at her home, Southville, St. George’s-road, Cheltenham, to-day at the age of 97. For very many years Mrs. Playle was a prominent worker for the Liberal cause, and on June 28, 1911, she was presented by the women Liberals of the town with a silver spirit kettle. She also did much active work for the Methodist Church, where she assisted her husband, who was a prominent Wesleyan. She maintained a keen interest in local religious and political affairs until the last and in spite of her great age she retained command of her faculties and was quite active. For many years she had been attended by Miss Morgan, who lived with her as a companion. She was the second wife of Mr. John Playle, who died on January 9, 1928, and before her marriage she was Miss E. Cummings, of Cheltenham. She is thus related by marriage to the Barnett family, the well-known county cricketers, as the first Mrs. Playle was grandmother to Mr. Charles Barnett and the late Mr. Edgar Barnett, former county cricketers, and great-grandmother to Mr. Charles Barnett, the present county cricketer. The funeral will take place on Friday. 2015 | Wikipedia - Charlie Barnett (cricketer) (Charles John Barnett (3 July 1910, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire – 28 May 1993, Stroud, Gloucestershire) was an English cricketer, who played in 20 Tests from 1933 to 1948. He was one of Wisden ’s five Cricketers of the Year in 1937. Life and career One of the most stylish batsman of the 1930s, Barnett began his career in the middle order for Gloucestershire, but made his name as an opener after the retirement of A.E. Dipper in 1932. The greater responsibility added a tighter defence to his flashing array of drives and cuts, and he was picked for England against the West Indies in 1933. He marked his debut with a half century, batting at number 8, and passed 2,000 runs for the season. Although he remained vulnerable to an early dismissal, once set he was a formidable player and he recorded 48 centuries in all. Eleven sixes in an innings of 194 against Somerset in 1934, stands as a testament to the power of his stroke play. He failed to pass 1,500 runs in only two seasons, and gradually developed his left arm medium pace bowling, as a useful adjunct to his batting. Barnett scored two Test centuries, putting on 219 for the first wicket with Len Hutton against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1938, as England compiled 658 for eight. His undefeated 98 before lunch on the first day of that Ashes series, remains the closest any Englishman has ever come to recording a century, before lunch, on the first day of a Test match against Australia. However his career, like so many others, was stymied by World War II. He returned after the war in four more tests with little success, and retired from the county game to take up a league engagement for Rochdale, and later ran his own meat and poultry business. He became a school coach until his retirement, and died in May 1993, at the age of 82.) |
