John Horace Smith & Martha Hagger - 3xgreat-grandparents
Ernest George Smith
John Horace Smith was born in 1850 in Norton, Hertfordshire. His parents were gardener John Smith and Eliza Bray. His paternal grandfather Thomas Smith was a maltster from Cambridgeshire. John had a brother Arthur and a sister Jane.
Martha Hagger was christened on 7 December 1845 in Norton. Her parents were William Hagger, an agricultural labourer and Sarah Wilsher. William was the parish clerk of Norton from 1860 until his retirement in the 1890s. His father and grandfather before him had also been parish clerk of Norton.
John and Martha had their first child in 1867, inexplicably born in Gildersome, Yorkshire. Possibly Martha was trying to get away from the local area as it was an illegitimate birth. The couple had another son before marrying on 4 April 1869 in Norton. They then lived with John's parents in Norton. John worked as a gardener with his father. Martha's mother was visiting the Smith family at the time of the 1871 census, probably helping Martha with her children. John and Martha lived in Baldock, Hertfordshire for the next few years.
In about 1877 the family moved to Walton-on-Thames, Surrey where they lived in High Street. John worked as a labourer, painter & decorator, mechanic, lamplighter, and as a local board employee. In the late 1880s they moved to Church Street, Walton-on-Thames. Alfred moved to London and Bertram moved to Bedfordshire.
John died aged 44 and was buried on 17 February 1895 in St. Mary's, Walton-on-Thames. Martha continued raising her family, which included a young son Ralph, who died in 1905 aged fifteen. Her son Ernest married and had six children, and lived next door to her. Her daughter Kate remained at home and unmarried, working as a barmaid, and had an illegitimate daughter in 1906. The three lived together until Martha died aged 83 and was buried on 5 June 1929 in St. Mary's.
