Samuel Bray was christened on 20 May 1750 in Therfield, Hertfordshire, the son of Samuel Bray and Mary Oakman.
Mary Hodge was christened on 24 March 1744 in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, the daughter of impoverished carpenter Robert Hodge and Hursley Tibbals.
Samuel and Mary married on 22 October 1770 in Bassingbourn and had eight children. Samuel died aged 38 and was buried in Therfield on 15 August 1788. Their youngest child was just a year old. Mary raised their children by herself, never remarrying. She died aged 69 and was buried on 1 March 1813 in Therfield.
