Ernest George Smith & Emily Larby-Wilson - 2xgreat-grandparents
Ernest George Smith was born in 1875 in Baldock, Hertfordshire. His parents were John Horace Smith, then working as a gardener with his own father John; and Martha Hagger, the daughter of the parish clerk of Norton and previously a servant.
Emily Larby was born in 1872 in Egham, Surrey. Her mother was Esther Larby, a laundress who never married, and her father may have been Ambrose Challis, previously the common-law husband of Esther, although they are believed to have separated in or before 1871. Emily claimed her father was William Wilson, a farmer.
Ernest and Emily married on 16 January 1899 in Walton-on-Thames. They had six children. The family lived in Church Lane, Walton-on-Thames, next-door to Ernest's mother Martha, until after the First World War when they moved to a home named Studley in Kings Road, Walton-on-Thames. Ernest worked as a grocer, had two bank jobs, served as a Corporal and Sergeant in the War, and was later an R.S.L. Club manager.
