Simon Hogendoorn was born on 7 February 1851 in Haarlem. His parents were Machiel Hogendoorn and Pieternelletje Bergman, both from Zuid-Holland, who had married in Ter Aar in 1845. His father was a labourer and his mother worked as a cleaner.
Catharina Groeneveld was born on 7 September 1863 in Haarlem. Her parents were Jacobus Groeneveld, a labourer and carter, and Catharina van Vliet. She had only two surviving siblings - Suzanna and Abraham, however Jacobus, Abraham, Abraham, Catharina and Gerardus all died in infancy; additionally Frits died aged seventeen.
Simon and Catharina married on 23 December 1885 in Haarlem. They had twelve children, of whom ten survived. Simon worked as a smith and from around 1900 also as a (metal)turner. He retired in around 1910, although appears to have worked as a shopkeeper for the next five years.
Catharina died on 29 April 1922 aged 58; Simon died on 10 November 1932 at St. Elisabeths Gasthuis in Haarlem, aged 81.
