The 1881 census shows Thomas, a draper's assistant, and Mary Isabel along with their two sons William and Tom; as well as Mary's parents William, a commission agent, and Mary Elizabeth. The family are living in "Woodville", Bishopthorpe, Yorkshire, and have a general servant named Elizabeth Risdale.
The 1891 shows Thomas, a woollen draper's assistant, and Mary Isabel living with their family at 1 Longfield Terrace, St. Olave, Yorkshire, which had at least five rooms. Their son William, 14, is working as a railway clerk, and the other children are Tom, Frederick James and Frank. Mary's parents William, a traveller, and Mary Elizabeth, are living with them, as is her widowed aunt Isabel Cloak.
The 1911 census shows Thomas, a woollen draper's assistant (worker) and Mary Isabel living together at 8 White Cross Road in York. Their home had six rooms.
